I was recently fortunate enough to meet the CEO of Robbins Auto Tops (California based) when he was over in London on a whirlwind tour of
his Soft Top distributors in Europe. As the UK distributor of Robbins Auto Tops (Car Hoods),
European Trimming Company deal with these guys on a near daily basis.
As a treat for our good friend from Robbins, and for myself if truth be known, we visited the Heritage Motor Museum
at Gaydon for the day. As an American, I'm in no doubt that the visit
was quite enlightening, and even as a British enthusiast, the quality
of static demonstrations at Gaydon never fails to impress me. There was
one particular guy who worked at the museum, who recognised my
companions accent and immediately offered to escort us around the
museum as if we were VIP's. This was really appreciated and again
proved to me that the guys working at Gaydon really enjoy their work.
Anyway, I'm digressing...In the car park of the museum sat an old Mazda
MX-5, one or two later MX5's, a Porsche Boxster and few other odds
including a fantastic Classic MG which was absolutely mint...better
than many of the actual museum exhibits in fact. My companion from Robbins was by now in his element - analysing every hood for fit and defect, and in the case of the MG - the Tonneau for pure quality.
This was the point whereby I realised just how obsessed our good friend was with quality and durability. We looked closely at a Boxster hood and he immediately pointed out a technique which had been used to bond the rear window. This wasn't a Robbins Roof but was another manufacturer's aftermarket 'upgrade' (as it had a glass rear window for a car which would have had a plastic window as standard). It seemed the bonding was different to the way in which Robbins bond their windows (a manner which is actually admired and respected by car trimmers and enthusiasts globally.)
I had always wondered how Robbins were able to confidently offer guarantees of up to 3 years from shipment from their plant (guarantees actually differ according to the type of material, colour etc) and having met with their chief operating officer, I now know why...These guys are obsessed with quality, and are constantly looking at ways to improve even further by buying state of the art machinery. It's fair to say, a Robbins hood is very often far superior to the original hood your car was made and supplied with.
